Working Safely With Propane

This legislated training requirement is recognized by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) and must be renewed every three years.

Although propane is a fuel commonly used across Ontario, its dangers are often forgotten. Propane is stored at high pressures and is very flammable. If the proper precautions are not taken, extensive damage to life and property can result.

It is important to understand the hazards of propane and to know the procedures and controls necessary to minimize those hazards. Special training is required to work safely with propane and propane equipment. This training program is designed to provide the information and practice necessary for workers to be able to safely connect, disconnect and activate propane torches, vehicles and heaters under 400,000 Btu/h.

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to recognize and evaluate the hazards of propane, and demonstrate how to safely connect, disconnect and activate various propane appliances including torches, heaters under 400,000 Btu/h, and propane powered vehicles. Workers may also attach a regulator to a fuel supply, a hose to a regulator, a valve to the hose, and an appliance to the hose, etc.

What a worker may not do is disassemble a component such as a valve, regulator or burner and make repairs or change component parts, without being the holder of the appropriate gas fitter certificate or specialized record of training.
