Successful completion of this classroom course meets the classroom training requirements of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) Mechanical Harvesting Equipment Operator and Forestry Pit & Road Construction Equipment Operator certification program.
The course examines how to recognize, assess and control health and safety related hazards associated with the operation of the following pieces of mechanical harvesting equipment:
- grapple skidder
- feller buncher
- cut-to-length processor
- forwarder/transporter
- delimber
- slasher and chipper
- log loader and grinder
The course also meets the classroom training requirements for operators of the following forestry pit and road construction equipment:
- hydraulic excavator
- bulldozer
- grader
- front-end loader
- haulage truck
- fuel truck and service truck
During the course, participants will be familiarized with how to recognize, assess and control rigging and hoisting hazards and the appropriate supporting equipment to complete lifting, rigging and towing tasks.
After successful completion of the course, participants will be able to understand the physical and mental requirements of the job and the working environment recognize the hazards and describe practices for safe machine operation, including personal protective equipment, circle check, preventive maintenance, danger zones and work planning. Participants will also be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the legal requirements, safe practices and procedures applicable to basic rigging, hoisting and towing safety on a logging operation.
