Two fatalities and more than 2800 injuries reported last year

Workplace Safety North has developed new infographics to help identify key trends and risk areas across Ontario’s mining sectors. The 2025 Workplace Health and Safety Snapshots for the mining sector and mining pits and quarries sector highlight the most common workplace injuries and illnesses affecting workers across the industry.
Last year, there were 4.05 injuries per 100 workers in the mining sector, and 4.25 injuries per 100 workers in the mining pits and quarries sector, highlighting the continued importance of prevention efforts.
Bodily reaction and exertion were the leading cause of lost-time injuries across both sectors. These incidents included overexertion, repetitive motions, and injuries related to physical demands of the work.
Contact with objects and equipment was another leading cause of injury. These incidents included workers being caught in or compressed by equipment or objects, struck by or against objects, or exposed to hazards involving friction, pressure or vibration.
Industry risk assessments and root cause analysis work have identified collisions involving mobile equipment, pedestrians, light vehicles, and fixed infrastructure as a key area of concern. These findings highlight the importance of strong traffic management systems, effective equipment design, reliable collision avoidance technology, and ongoing worker training to help reduce the risk of serious incidents.
Falls continue to be a top hazard in both sectors. Employers should take steps to identify and control slip, trip and fall hazards to help prevent injuries.
Occupational disease remains a key focus for prevention efforts. Diseases affecting the nervous system and sense organs, including noise-related effects on hearing, were among the most common occupational illnesses reported in both sectors. Other reported illnesses included circulatory system diseases and injuries or poisoning related to workplace exposures.
