Free courses cover airborne metals and gases and vapours

Workplace Safety North (WSN) has launched two new e-learning courses to help workplaces better understand occupational health hazards associated with airborne metals and gases and vapours. These courses supplement existing e-learning modules focused on diesel particulate matter, occupational noise, respirable crystalline silica, and hardwood and softwood dusts.

The free, self-paced courses are part of the Occupational Illness and Disease Prevention Research Project and build awareness of workplace exposure hazards, potential health effects, monitoring and prevention measures.

The new courses include:

“These courses provide practical information to help workplaces better understand exposure hazards and the steps they can take to prevent occupational illness,” says Steve Gore, WSN Industrial Hygiene Specialist. “They also cover legislation found in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations, helping workplaces stay current on requirements that may affect them.”

Airborne Metals Exposure

Airborne Metals Exposure covers common workplace sources of airborne metals, including welding, cutting, grinding, brazing and metal processing. The course explores potential health effects, occupational exposure limits and methods used to monitor exposure. Participants will also learn about control measures and how the recognize, assess, control and evaluate (RACE) approach can be used to manage airborne metal hazards.

Gases and Vapours E-learning

Gases and Vapours Exposure builds awareness of common workplace sources of gases and vapours as well as their potential impacts on worker health. The course covers the composition and behaviours of these agents, health effects associated with exposure, occupational exposure limits and recognized industrial hygiene standards. Participants will also learn about exposure monitoring practices and the RACE approach to managing these hazards.

The hazard-focused courses are intended to follow the Industrial Hygiene Fundamentals: Hazard awareness to protect Ontario workers e-learning course and are designed for individuals who support industrial hygiene monitoring and occupational health and safety programs.

Participants in the research project can continue their learning through hands-on workshops and workplace activities. The e-learning courses are free for anyone interested in learning more about workplace exposure hazards and occupational hygiene.
