New regulations and training standards taking effect April 1, 2024
Workplace Safety North (WSN) is gearing up to provide a mandatory webinar titled “Working at Heights Safety Training Update,” specifically tailored for WSN-approved trainers.
Scheduled to take place on a variety of dates, March 7, 15, 22, this webinar is an essential step for WSN-approved trainers who provide Working at Heights Safety Training (WAH). Failure to attend this session will result in an inability to conduct training after April 1, 2024.
“These sessions are aimed at both WSN staff and external WSN-approved trainers responsible for providing Working at Heights Safety Training,” says Jerry Traer, WSN Program Training Specialist. “The webinar is crucial for understanding and implementing the latest legislated training standards.”
Agenda highlights
The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (Ministry) has conducted a comprehensive review of the Working at Heights Safety Training Program and Provider Standard over the past five years.
“As a result of this review, significant changes have been made to the training standard,” says Traer, “which will come into effect on April 1, 2024. The webinar will cover all aspects of these changes, both large and small, ensuring that trainers are fully equipped to adapt to the revised standard. Workplace Safety North’s training program has been approved by the Ministry.”
Mark your calendar
Trainers are urged to mark their calendars for one of the following dates: Thursday, March 7, Friday, March 15, or Friday, March 22. The session will run for approximately 60 to 90 minutes.
“The webinar is designed to familiarize trainers with the revisions to the Working at Heights Safety Training Program and Provider Standard. Failure to attend one of these sessions would mean the trainer would not be able to teach this training after April 1, 2024,” notes Traer.

New safety training certification system
As of February 26, the government introduced a new system to keep track of important safety training certifications. These certifications are required for jobs where people work at heights and for those who are part of joint health and safety committees.
The new system looks different, but it still lets people access their records, find places to get trained, and sign up for courses. The companies that provide the training are still able to manage their courses and get approval for them. The changes were made based on feedback to make the system easier to use.
Who should attend
Attendance is mandatory for all WSN-approved trainers, including both internal staff and external trainers. This ensures that all trainers are well-versed in the updated standards and can continue to deliver high-quality training in Working at Heights Safety.
“With the deadline approaching, it’s important for WSN-approved trainers to register for the webinar as soon as possible to secure your spot,” says Traer. “Don’t miss out on this invaluable opportunity to stay informed and up to date with the latest changes in Working at Heights Safety Training.”
Workplace safety is everyone's responsibility. By staying informed and actively participating in training updates, trainers play a vital role in promoting a safe and secure work environment for all.
