Enhancing Supervisory Due Diligence

Duly Diligent Mining Supervisor

In the mining industry, effective supervisory practices are crucial for maintaining safety, efficiency, and compliance. Supervisors play a key role in ensuring standards are met, risks are mitigated, and team performance is optimized. Due diligence in supervision involves a careful review of workplace conditions, safety protocols, and employee performance, making it a vital component of successful mining operations.

Per Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, employers are responsible for appointing supervisors who are deemed competent persons. This term has a specific definition in the Act. For more information, take a look at the following video.

Competent supervisors know their legal responsibilities. They also inspect the workplace to identify hazards, investigate incidents to determine causes, and coach people to complete their tasks effectively and safely.

To support supervisors in upholding these standards, Workplace Safety North is pleased to introduce a two-day Mining First Line Supervisor Refresher course. This training program is designed to provide those who have already taken a recognized Supervisor Common Core program with information that reinforces supervisors' knowledge and skills, ensuring they remain up-to-date with best practices in the field.

The course covers key topics, including:

  • latest updates to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations
  • maintaining a positive workplace culture, managing intergenerational teams, and optimizing psychological health and safety
  • risk management and risk prevention
  • steps toward investigating workplace incidents, identifying root causes, and implementing measure to prevent recurrence

“I liked that [Mining First Line Supervisor Refresher] touched base on a lot of the common core course. It refreshed a lot of stuff I forgot.” – Marc G

“I will take people’s mental health into consideration going forward, and I will reference Regulation 854 more than I do.” – Anthony R

The refresher course is designed for individuals who already have supervisory experience but want to update their expertise or adapt to evolving industry standards. By participating, supervisors will gain a deeper understanding of their responsibilities and enhance their ability to manage teams effectively while ensuring workplace health and safety. The course is a valuable tool for promoting supervisory due diligence and fostering a culture of continuous improvement within mining operations.
