Mandatory Skills Training

Employees in the forestry and mining sector are legally required to take Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) modular classroom training programs. Workplace Safety North's suite of mandatory programs includes health and safety classroom training for chainsaw, cable skidder and mechanical harvesting equipment operators, as well as for first-line mining supervisors. Forestry training is also available in French. The MTCU sets competency requirements for these programs and WSN is responsible for developing and delivering them to you.

Common Core for First Line Supervisors (Program #770121, #770131 and #770141)

WSN provides legislated training for the Supervisor Common Core, which meets the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) requirements for the mining industry. For a complete listing of course descriptions and availability, view upcoming training schedule.

  • Program #770131: Underground Mine Supervisor - Underground Soft Rock Mining
  • Program #770141: Generic First Line Supervisor - Surface Mining, Surface and Underground Diamond Drilling Operations, and Surface and Underground Mining Trades

The following courses meet the knowledge requirements for the modules of the Common Core for First Line Supervisors.

To become fully accredited under the supervisory common core programs, participants must return to their workplaces following each module and demonstrate to a qualified trainer their skills and their understanding of the company's specific requirements according to government legislation, company standards and manufacturer specifications in use in the workplace. See also: Mining Industry Signing Authority Audit Resources.

Recommended Prerequisites: To ensure success in this series of modules, all participants should take the WSN Act and Mining Regulations and Introduction to Mining Safety Programs courses before taking any other courses.
