Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, at least one worker member and one management member of the joint health and safety committee (JHSC) are required to be certified. Certification is divided between generic training (Part 1) and sector-specific training (Part 2), which must be taken within twelve months of each other.

This three-day sector-specific training course is designed to provide participants with the information and tools they need as JHSC members to recognize, assess and recommend controls for the hazards that are commonly found in mining sector  workplaces. This includes understanding how to identify the relevant legislation, as well as standards, guidelines and best practices as they apply to the hazards in question.

Course topics include: dust and particulates; mine ventilation; fatigue, stress and the shiftworker; ground control; water management; electrical hazards; lockout; underground haulage; surface mobile equipment and falls from elevations.

There are also three optional sections - emergency preparedness, MSD prevention and noise - which can be substituted for any of the above 11 hazards at the wish of the employer. Employers are encouraged to conduct an assessment with their JHSC to identify if any of the three optional sections should replace the 11 core sections in the three-day course.
