The use of battery-operated mobile equipment has increased significantly in Ontario mines, and raises several safety concerns, including fire. Applying a strong maintenance program can reduce the risk of hazards that are unique to operating battery electric vehicles (BEV) or the traditional diesel equipment used in mining.
The Canadian Standards Association Group standard CSA M424.4:22 Self-propelled, electrically driven, non-rail-bound mobile machines for use in non-gassy underground mines was finalized in August 2022. Access to this standard will help create industry consistency in advancing BEV workplace safety.
