Last year, the Northern Ontario Safety Group met three times to share and build their health and safety knowledge, and network with other business owners.

The group of 87 Ontario businesses showed a marked reduction in both the number and severity of injuries in the workplace, according to group facilitator, Workplace Safety North (WSN).

“The group’s efforts resulted in a 12 per cent reduction in lost-time injury frequency, as well as an 11 per cent decrease in lost-time injury severity,” says Rose Bedard, WSN Prevention Services Assistant - Safety Groups.

“Their successful efforts have a tremendous combined effect on everyday health and safety of workers,” notes Bedard. “The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) recognized those efforts by providing the group with a $1.8 million rebate on their premiums for the program year.

“This significant year-after-year effort to eliminate workplace injuries shows how the Safety Group program helps companies develop a significantly healthier and safer workplace,”

“Congratulations to all Safety Group member firms! And thanks to all northern health and safety association consultants and staff who assisted the Northern Ontario Safety Group throughout the year,” says Bedard.

The Northern Ontario Safety Group is jointly sponsored by the four provincial health and safety associations (Workplace Safety North, Workplace Safety and Prevention Services, Public Services Health and Safety Association, and Infrastructure Health and Safety Association), and all businesses throughout northern Ontario are invited to participate.
