Exceptional educational sessions, networking opportunities and keynote speakers

Each year, the annual mining health and safety conference in Sudbury, Ontario, consistently attracts a full house of new and returning attendees. Considered the Ontario mining and health safety event of the year, the annual conference provides attendees with exceptional educational sessions, networking opportunities and keynote speakers, including Dr. Louis Francescutti.

As an emergency department physician, a university professor, an international speaker, President of the Canadian Medical Association, and immediate Past-President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Dr. Francescutti has spent more than two decades delivering one single message: Live Smart.

Dr. Louis FrancescuttiOne of Canada’s leading medical visionaries and regarded internationally for his “down to earth” and often “bold” methodologies, Lou is not intimidated by political correctness, nor is he afraid to tell it like it is.  “People need to hear what the real issues are--no sugar coating,” he says. “We live in a world that is far too complex and unforgiving.  People need to learn that they are in control of their future and fortune – both in terms of health and happiness.”

Dr. Francescutti will be speaking to WSN conference delegates on the topic of injury prevention. Over the course of his career, Dr. Francescutti has made it his mission to raise awareness of public safety and to promote injury prevention. Born in Montréal, he received his combined Doctor of Philosophy (Immunology) in 1985 and his Doctor of Medicine in 1987 from the University of Alberta.

While training as a general surgery resident, he became fascinated with the subject of trauma prevention. In 1994, he completed his further studies in injury control while working toward a Masters of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

After completing his residency in preventative medicine at the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in 1995, Dr. Francescutti joined the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, where he became an emergency and preventative medicine physician. In that role, he witnessed first-hand the devastating impact of preventable injuries. Dr. Francescutti currently works as an emergency physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Northeast Community Health Centre in Edmonton. As a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, Dr. Francescutti has taught courses in injury control and public health.
